Madeline is a determined young woman, tenacious and strong-willed, but at the same time deeply vulnerable, anxious, and in constant conflict with herself. She climbs Mount Celeste as a personal challenge to prove to herself that she can achieve something great and take control of her life, ignoring the warnings of others. Her journey is a direct representation of her battle against depression and anxiety. She tends to isolate herself, run from her problems, and sometimes sacrifice her own well-being for the sake of others. Relationship with "Badeline" (Part of me): At first she fights against her other half—the physical manifestation of her fears, insecurities, and negative thoughts—. Over time, she learns that she must not destroy her or reject her, but accept and integrate her in order to move forward. Throughout the game, thanks to characters like Theo and Granny (the grandmother), she goes from frustration and self-abandonment to self-recognition, patience, and self-care.
